BREATHING ASSISTANCE – FORCING THE EXHALATION

My name is Grzegorz, I am 44 years old. I live in Poland (Europe). I've been suffering from Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Although I‘ve been a patient of the Warsaw Hospice for Children since May 2001, where I was admitted because of oxygen deficiency (anoxia), which was the result of weakness of respiratory muscles. I was near death or connecting to the respirator. But me and my parents did not decide on using the respirator because of the information we gathered from the medical society, medical books and Internet about the respirator and the quality of life of the people living with /on the respirator – we weren't convinced. Although there are different opinions about that. I have a lot of friends who are pleased about respirator.

So my father, who is electronic engineer, constructed a simple machine which assists my breathing.

When I am laying on my back the special lever (moving by the electric engine) presses my lower ribs about 18 times per minute. When the lever falls down is breathe out, when the lever is up - it is breath in (look at Video). Thanks to this machine I’ve been living for 5 years. I don’t need to spend the whole day and night in the bed and I don’t have any signs of oxygen deficiency.

Because of these facts I want to ask you physicians, medical companies to take this idea – this machine (its application) into consideration. First the applications of the machine, then maybe its production (in professional form). My request is because carers of the people with muscular dystrophies ask us to construct such machines for them, but my father doesn’t have time and possibilities to produce such equipment (easy and reliable).

Furthermore my father did more machines which assist breathing. Two for the wheelchair and one for the car.
I am available for all of you, I will do everything I can and I invite you to see this equipment. First please do contact me lojewski_g@wp.pl
